Today South Africans take part in a day of celebration and observance in recognition of Youth Day on 16 June. It's a day to celebrate the youth of South Africa and the power of their dedication, hard work and determination to make a difference in the world. In this article, we will explore the story behind Youth Day, the importance of empowering South Africa’s youth, and how QikTruck can help.
South Africa's annual Youth Day celebration takes place each year on June 16, commemorating the 1976 Soweto Uprising when South African youth, between the ages of 12 and 18 at that time, protested against the country’s oppressive and unfair apartheid laws. Those protests sparked demonstrations countrywide and has spurred South Africa towards a more just and equitable nation.
The protests came to symbolize the frustration of South African youth and the power of the youth voice, focusing on the human rights of young people in the country and staking a claim in South Africa's future. The late anti-apartheid revolutionary, Nelson Mandela, once said of the Soweto Uprising: “The soul of the nation was touched, and the spirit of South African youth aroused."
In the years following the Soweto Uprising, South Africa has made strides towards a more equal future. However, with the country's current unemployment rate at around 30%, young people under the age of 34 remain vulnerable to poverty, unemployment, and a lack of access to basic social services. This is where empowerment comes in.
Empowering South African youth entails building the confidence and capacity of young people to make decisions and drive change in their own lives and communities. This can be done through initiatives that support young people to engage in various activities, such as sport, music, or entrepreneurship, to build their life skills, resilience, and autonomy. Through education, job-skills training, and exposure to potential job opportunities, young people are able to create a brighter future for themselves and the country.
At QikTruck we are proud to partner with many local businesses, organisations and young entrepreneurs to help them grow and drive forward real change. With efficient, affordable and reliable on-demand truck- and driver-hire solutions, businesses can transport goods safely and securely, allowing for immense growth potential. Our solutions are designed to meet the needs of South African businesses and provide a pathway for success.
By becoming a QikTruck partner, youth-owned businesses can benefit from lower transport costs, faster delivery times and improved customer satisfaction. In turn, this allows businesses to focus on expanding and reaching a wider audience, creating more job opportunities. At QikTruck, we embrace the energy and enthusiasm of South African youth and are committed to helping them drive economic change and a brighter future on Youth Day and beyond.
Youth Day provides a special opportunity to recognise and reflect on the power of South Africa’s young people and the importance of empowering them to create a better future. At QikTruck, we are excited to be part of that process and join in on Youth Day celebrations.
