Empowering the Next Generation - Youth Day in South Africa
Youth Day in South Africa is an important day, where young people in Africa pay homage to and celebrate the student uprising of 1976 in Soweto. It is a day of reflection, power and growth of the nation’s youth. On the 16th of June, millions of young South Africans gather to mark the most important day of the year, reinforced by government policies, activities and events.

The idea of Youth Day in South Africa has been around since Apartheid was abolished in 1994. The liberation of South Africa gave rise to a new nation, and the youth of the country took it upon themselves to reach out and create a peaceful, prosperous and tolerant nation. This consequently gave rise to the establishment of the National Youth Day movement by government, which focused on the empowerment of young people.
In areas as diverse as education, job training, health, wellness and social services, the National Youth Day Movement has made great strides in inspiring and empowering the young generation of South Africa.
