Advocating for Gender Equality in South Africa

South Africa is a multi-cultural country, made up of different ethnicities, gender and sexual orientations. With such a diverse society, gender equality and gender rights is increasingly becoming a priority in South Africa.

Women’s Day is celebrated annually on the 9th of August in South Africa in honour of the millions of women throughout the country who have worked to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment. The theme for Women’s Day 2020 elucidates the importance of the role women play in society and is ‘Inspiring women to be the best they can be’. Gender equality is central to building a South Africa that works for everybody and it’s essential that all South Africans play their part. Women face a myriad of the challenges posed by traditional mindsets that regard the role of women as subordinate to that of men. To overcome these, organisations from both the private and public sectors must fiercely advocate for gender equality. This includes repealing outdated laws that contribute to gender-based inequality, creating equal pay frameworks for both men and women and campaigning for greater representation of women in leadership positions.

The government can also play a central role in empowering women in South Africa. For example, the Women's Empowerment and Gender Equality (WEGE) Bill places a duty on the state to reduce all forms of discrimination, eliminate all forms of gender-based violence and entrench access to equal economic and social opportunities for women.

Investing in education and skills-building is vital when advocating for gender equality in South Africa. Research indicates that girls who are educated are more likely to be employed in well-paid positions, whereas boys may find themselves in more precarious roles. Positive role models, such as female leaders, entrepreneurs and prominent professionals must also be made more visible in the workplace. This will demonstrate to young girls that anything is achievable.

It is important to celebrate International Women’s Day as it provides an opportunity to not only thank women for their significant contributions but also advocate for greater gender equality in South Africa. Women can continue to be celebrated and honoured for their exemplary work and resilience in the face of adversity.
