University residence rooms in South Africa follow a remarkably consistent floor plan: single bed, desk, wardrobe, and just enough space to walk between them. What you bring either fits or it creates three weeks of daily frustration. This list was compiled from students who moved into res, made mistakes, and then figured out what actually mattered.

The essentials: bring these without question

  • Single bed bedding set. Two sets is the practical number. Most res mattresses are standard single, but measure yours on arrival before buying extra covers.
  • Two bath towels and a hand towel. More than this creates a storage problem.
  • Extension cord with surge protection. Res rooms have two power points, never where you need them. A 5-way surge protector on a 2-metre cord covers most scenarios.
  • Laptop, charger and a backup laptop charger. The backup charger lives in your bag, not your room.
  • Padlock. Res storage lockers and gym lockers require your own padlock. A standard keyed padlock with two spare keys works.
  • One week of non-perishables. Moving in during orientation week means no time to shop. Instant oats, peanut butter, and crackers keep you functional.

Useful but not critical

  • Small fan or desk heater depending on the city and season
  • Bluetooth speaker (check res rules on noise)
  • Cable lock for laptop security in communal areas
  • Compact first aid kit with common pain medication and plasters
  • Power bank for long library sessions

Leave at home

Every year students arrive at res with full kitchen sets, large TVs, and bulky furniture they then have to store or take home at year end. Res provides a bed, desk and wardrobe. Beyond a few personal items, the room will not fit more.

Specifically: no need for a rice cooker, microwave, full bedside table, gaming setup larger than a laptop, or more than one week of clothing at a time. Your wardrobe at home is better than your wardrobe in an 80cm res cupboard.

Moving into res this year?

A standard res move fits in a bakkie with space to spare. Driver included, from R350. Your parents can follow in the car.

How to fit everything in one trip

Most student moves into res fit comfortably in a 1-ton open bakkie. Stack boxes first, bedding on top. Fold the curtains (if you bring your own) flat with bedding. Put the desk fan or heater in last, on top of the load. If your load exceeds what fits in a bakkie, reconsider what you are bringing before booking a larger vehicle.

Can I bring my own furniture to university res?

Most South African university residences do not allow students to bring large personal furniture. A desk lamp, compact shelf unit and small bedside organiser are usually permitted. Check your specific res rules before bringing anything.

What size vehicle do I need to move into res?

A 1-ton open bakkie handles the average student res move in one trip. If you are bringing a desk, wardrobe or additional furniture, book a 1.5-ton closed van. QikTruck provides an instant quote based on your load.
