Visit the lighthouse and if you’re feeling brave, hike down to the Old Lighthouse at the very tip of the point. But be careful – the path is steep and narrow and the slopes are prone to landslides.

Take a journey from the present all the way back to our ancient past at the Cradle of Humankind, a Unesco World Heritage Site just outside of Johannesburg. The unspoiled dolomite landscapes are home to underground caves known as hominin fossil sites, and visitors have the chance to explore this World Heritage Site with specialized and experienced guides. There are also walking trails, exhibits and night safaris which visitors can enjoy.

5. Nelson Mandela Capture Site

A haunting reminder of Apartheid in South Africa, the Nelson Mandela Capture Site is a monument dedicated to the former president, who was arrested in this small KwaZulu-Natal town in 1962 on charges of treason. Visit the memorial for a poignant reminder of the effects of Apartheid and to learn about Mandela's legacy.

6. Robben Island

Robben Island was the prison that held Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners during the Apartheid era. Take a ferry from the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town and tour the island with a former political prisoner. See the limestone quarry where Mandela worked and visit the prison buildings. The island also has a museum and a nature reserve.
