South Africa is renowned for its diverse nature, and its countless waterfalls are no exception. Spanning from falls cascading down mountainsides to cascades tumbling over cliffs, South Africa boasts some of the most beautiful and accessible waterfalls in the world.
This showcase consists of some of the most stunning and captivating waterfalls in the country, from the majestic and awe-inspiring Tugela Falls in the Drakensberg to the lesser known, but equally impressive powerful waterfalls of the Eastern Cape.
At 948 m (3,110 ft), Tugela Falls is amongst the highest waterfalls in Africa, and one of the most beautiful. Located in the Royal Natal National Park in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, this four-tier waterfall tumbles down the sheer Amphitheatre cliffs. Although relatively remote, the surrounding natural beauty makes the climb worth it!
Augrabies Fall National Park is a nature reserve in the Northern Cape of South Africa. This stunning park is home to the 56m (183ft) Augrabies Falls, which is formed as the Orange River rushes down a very rocky corridor and cascades off granite cliffs. The park also boasts rare wildlife species and some of South Africa’s most impressive landscapes.
The Montagu Pass Waterfall, also known as Appelsbosch Fontein, is a spectacular sight. It is located between George and Uniondale, in the Western Cape of South Africa, right in the middle of the Wilderness National Park. The waterfall drops into a deep pool at the bottom of the pass, and is surrounded by lush fynbos vegetation, cycads, and plant species unique to the area.
Victoria Falls is one of the world’s most well-known waterfalls. The name comes from explorer David Livingstone, who named the falls after Queen Victoria. It is located on the Limpopo River, at the border between South Africa and Zimbabwe. It is one of the most powerful waterfalls in Africa and also one of the most spectacular, with a 125 m (410 ft) drop.
Mac Mac Falls is a breathtaking waterfall located in Mpumalanga, in the south of the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve. It is formed at the confluence of three rivers – the Mac Mac, Gods and Sabie – that plummet over sheer cliffs, making for a spectacular display of cascading waters. This 65m (213ft) tall waterfall is truly a sight to behold!
Howick Falls is the most famous and accessible waterfall in KwaZulu-Natal, and is known as the ‘place of the startled owl’. It is located on the Umgeni River and is an impressive 94 m (308 ft) tall. You can get up close to the waterfall while enjoying the spectacular surrounds, which consist of lush green vegetation and spectacular views over the Umgeni Valley.
Flathead’s Falls is a hidden gem tucked away in the village of Ficksburg, in the Free State province of South Africa. This picturesque waterfall is accessible via a steep and winding road, leading to a viewing point overlooking the waterfall. Although relatively off the beaten track, it is certainly worth the effort.
