Every year, the South African people remember December 10th as Human Rights Day, commemorating the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations in 1948. This special day serves as an annual reminder of our duty to protect and promote human rights in South Africa. Human Rights Day is an opportunity to discuss and re-examine the importance of this universal cause and to find ways to further its progress. It is also a day for us to reflect on the disparities in South African society, and to work together to make a positive difference.
Unfortunately, the post-apartheid era in South Africa has tragically been marked by ongoing violations of human rights, with a high rate of gender-based violence, human trafficking, and widespread public and police brutality.
We must continue to take steps to protect and promote human rights in South Africa. We need to bring to light the often forgotten sections of our population: those living in poverty, women, minorities, persons of disability, and the LGBTIQ community. We need to understand their experiences and struggles to reach our goal. Changes in attitude and guidance from the government are necessary to ensure that human rights are respected in South Africa.
Rather than viewing them as separate goals, we must strive for the effective protection and promotion of human rights in South Africa. This will include improved training for law enforcement officers to ensure that they treat all citizens with dignity and respect.
We should also take an active role in our local communities. This can include educating ourselves and our neighbours on human rights, speaking up when something wrong is happening, and connecting with our elected representatives to ensure that human rights matters are discussed and given appropriate attention.
There are many things we can do in our communities to promote and protect human rights in South Africa. We need to focus on the most vulnerable and disadvantaged populations, and promote an understanding of their issues and how to best serve them. This can include:
We must also work collaboratively with other organizations, governments, and international institutions to ensure that the human rights issues in South Africa are addressed in a comprehensive and effective manner.

We must reach out to the most vulnerable and disadvantaged in our communities and work together to make a positive difference. Qiktruck is proud to be part of the movement to create a culture of inclusion and respect in South Africa today.
